Back from the Snow and Ice Experience, limbs frozen, the best way to loosen up was taking the Antarctic Hagglund Ride. Before 1920 all Antartic exploration was done on foot; there were no helicopters and even tractors were not used until after 1920. The introduction of the Hagglund all-terrain vehicles in 1985 improved the transportation of staff and material on ice.
So got on board the Huggland vehicle and buckled up for an experience e of all-terrain traverse in this unique machine. The driver tells us to hold on tight since you will sway from one end of the vehicle to the other. 'And in case of an emergency,' he says, 'here's a button you should press and I will stop'.
After around 20 minutes of a speed drive over rocky terrain and slush you learn about the demanding capabilities of this amphibious vehicle.
