Deccan Chargers finished at the bottom of the Indian Premier League last season. Thus, this season not much was expected of them; all the more because they failed to purchase any top international stars. But, despite the underdog status, they are sitting pretty atop the standings with eight points after winning their first four matches.

And much credit for their renaissance must go to captain Adam Gilchrist. The former Aussie wicketkeeper is proving virtually unstoppable with the bat. His captaincy too has come in for praise from all quarters.

In their last match against Chennai Super Kings, Gilchrist hammered 44 from 19 deliveries to lead Deccan's inspiring run chase of 166. He currently tallies 163 runs from four games at 40.75, but his strike rate of 171.57 has made all the difference. Besides, the way he handled the young Pragyan Ojha, one of the tournament's best spinners thus far, shows how good a man-manager he is.
