After the Sydney Test he will continue playing one-day internationals for another four months before retiring altogether after the World Cup, to be held in the West Indies in March and April.
His dismissal of Pietersen was well-thought out. He induced a top edge after Pietersen (41) had charged down the wicket once too often. The miscued pull ended in the hands of a leaping Michael Hussey at midwicket to end a 109-run third-wicket partnership.
