Debutant Zander De Bruyn scored a strokeful 83 as the South African batsmen continued to pile pressure on the hosts.
De Bruyn, who scored 83, shared a 144-run sixth-wicket partnership with Hall to give South Africa the upper hand. He then added 60 runs for the seventh wicket with Shaun Pollock but missed out on a deserved century.
