Hall's long vigil at the crease came to an end when he was dismissed by India's Anil Kumble.
The 29-year-old made 163 to register the highest Test score by a South African batsman in India, improving upon Daryl Cullinan's 153 not out made during the 1996-97 tour.
Hall's wicket gave Kumble his 28th five-wicket haul in a Test innings.
