About 13,000 New York yellow cabs went off the streets on Wednesday, after the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, led by executive director Bhairavi Desai, called for a 48-hour strike to protest the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission's requirement that all medallion cabs in New York have GPS tracking software installed on their meters.
The NYTWA argues that the move would amount to spying on drivers. The drivers have already won the support of the city's Central Labor Council and its 400 union affiliates, the NYTWA said recently.
