The Rajasthan government will request the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the death of a student leader in Ajmer, earlier this week.

The decision was taken at a high level meeting of officials chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot here Friday evening, an official spokesman said.

Gehlot, who was in Mumbai when the incident occurred, sought details about the case at the meeting, on his return to the state capital. Home Minister Gulab Singh Shaktawat, chief secretary Indrajit Khanna and Director General Police Amitab Gupta attended the meeting.

The president of the Students' Union of the Government College in Ajmer, Dharmendra Meghvanshi (25), died in police custody on June 19, sparking off protests throughout the state.

Clock Tower police station in-charge Harsahaya Meena had been arrested under charges of murder, after suspension from service. Six other policemen who were suspended have gone underground to avoid arrest.

The CID (Crime Branch) of the state police is presently investigating the case.

The spokesman said the government would send a formal request to the home ministry for a CBI inquiry within a day or two.

The court of the civil judge (Ajmer south) remanded Meena to judicial custody till July 7.

The police had picked up Meghvanshi, who belonged to the National Students Union of India (NSUI), on Monday night for allegedly riding a scooter under the influence of alcohol. When the police took him to the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital early on Tuesday, he was declared dead on admission.

Students protested in Ajmer and Kota and a bandh was observed on Thursday. In Jaipur, the University of Rajasthan was closed for a day in protest against the custody death.
