DPC refuses to accept 'protest payment' of Rs 1.39 billion April bill

Irked by the legal notice slapped by the Maharashtra State Electrcity Board, Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company on Friday refused to accept the board's 'protest payment' of Rs 1.39 billion towards the April bill.

"We had sent the bill on Friday, but they refused to accept it and have not given any reasons for the same," a senior MSEB official told reporters in Bombay.

When contacted, MSEB chairman Vinay Bansal said he had not been apprised of the reasons for DPC's non-acceptance of the bill.

The MSEB official said as an alternative, the board would now directly deposit the amount in DPC's account and also sent a letter to this effect to the multinational stating the circumstances under which the payment was done.

"We do not understand the refusal. MSEB has been upto date with its payments every month except the December and January bill of Rs 2.13 billion, which has been asked to adjust in the Rs 4.01 billion penalty," he added.

DPC spokesperson refused to comment on the issue.

Asked whether this was MSEB's last payment to DPC, the official said, "now that the matter is with MERC, the board would seek directions on the same from the regulator itself."
