CM asks Godbole to withdraw resignation; meet with DPC called offOur Correspondent in Bombay Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Wednesday appealed to Madhav Godbole to withdraw his resignation from the chairmanship of the committee set up for renegotiating the power purchase agreement with the Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company. Meanwhile, the renegotiation panel which was supposed to meet with DPC representatives for the second time on Wednesday morning, has cancelled its meeting. Godbole, former Union Home Secretary, submitted his resignation to the chief minister on Wednesday morning after an adverse comment made against him by the NCP president Sharad Pawar at a public function on Tuesday night. "Godbole's in-depth knowledge and experience makes him indispensable for handling vexed issues such as renegotiation with the US energy giant," Deshmukh said. "I am requesting him on behalf of the Maharashtra government to reconsider his decision to resign," he added. In an apparent criticism of Godbole, Pawar had said, he was "apprehensive of the outcome of the discussions with Enron as those leading the talks from the government side are working with a negative approach". Plans go awry On Tuesday night, the Dabhol Power Company issued a statement that its representatives, including its managing director, K Wade Cline, would attend the meeting and were hopeful of something emerging from it.
