Madhav Godbole quits Enron renegotiation panel

Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Bombay

Madhav Godbole, the former civil servant who headed the committee set up by the Maharashtra government earlier this month to review the controversial Enron power project, resigned on Wednesday morning.

His decision came hours after Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar's statement in Bombay on Tuesday that Godbole had a negative attitude towards Enron and this was a cause for concern.

Godbole told rediff.com: "I have resigned because of Pawar's statement. I cannot tolerate this type of personal criticism."

Asked about the Maharashtra government's reaction to his resignation, Godbole said, "There has been no communication (from their side). I have not spoken to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh after my resignation."

At a function organised by the Swatantraveer Savarkar Samarak on Tuesday, Pawar said a malicious and negative approach by the head of the Enron renegotiation panel would be damaging to the entire exercise.

Pawar also expressed unhappiness with the pre-termination notice served by the Dabhol Power Company to the state government.

Asked if there was any chance of withdrawing his resignation if Deshmukh intervened to resolve the controversy, Godbole said, "There is no question of going back on my decision."

After he reviewed the Dabhol Power Company's power purchase agreement with the Maharashtra State Electricity Board, Godbole was appointed to lead the team to renegotiate the PPA following the US energy major's threat to terminate the treaty.

When announcing the appointment, government sources had then told rediff.com: "Godbole has been chosen to head the renegotiation team as he knows each and every minute detail of the 2,184 mw project."
