Born to an Italian father and New Zealand mother, Vettori broke two vertebrae in his back, his nose and a cheekbone in an accident when he was nine.
In 1996, Daniel won the 'Sunday Star-times' Sportfit Future Champions best cricketer award following a brilliant performance with the New Zealand Youth team in England. Within a month of winning this award, he became the youngest player to represent New Zealand in a Test. He was 18 years and 10 days old.
