Getting There

For Indians, the Himalayan Kingdom is a most convenient holiday destination. It is just across the border. There are very few immigration controls. The Indian currency is universally accepted. There are a number of entry points from India. And there is no language or 'race' barrier. I have even entered Nepal once on my driver's license and at another time with the election card issued during Shri Sheshan's raj. Flights to Kathmandu orginate from a number of Indian cities and are substantially subsidized for Indian and Nepalese citizens.

Best Season

Nepal is at its most beautiful from the months of September to March. September or October would be ideal for those who can't put up with the cold. The rains have washed the atmosphere clean. The air is crisp with the anticipation of autumn. And the combination of both makes the views of the snow clad peaks even more breathtaking. In fact the holiday starts even before your flight lands. If you are flying in from Delhi, make sure you get window seat on the 'A' side and feast your eyes on aerial views of one of the most famous mountain ranges in the world. Conversely, when flying out try and get a window seat on the right.

Information on Nepal

The best information you can get about the country is from someone who has been there recently. Next best -- and in some ways better -- would be to get hold of a travel guide published abroad. I myself used the Lonely Planet guide on Nepal. If you can't hold of a copy in India, you can get one within couple of hours of arrival, at any book shop in Nepal. Bargain for a used guide. There are tips, suggestions and recommendations on every aspect of travel in Nepal and anecdotes about various spots that make your visit much more interesting.
