More wattage does not mean more brightness

Last updated on: April 15, 2015 10:19 IST

Let us break an age old myth. It is generally believed that more number of watts means more brightness. However, the fact is that wattage has nothing to do with brightness. Wattage is the amount of electricity consumed by a light source. You should check the lumens as that is a unit of brightness.

Lumens

What is Lumens?

Lumens are a measure of brightness emitted by a particular light source. In simple terms, the intensity or the brightness of your light is called lumens. Most people tend to mix lumens with consumption. However, watts are related to consumption of electricity whereas lumens are all about brightness.

Lumens equal brightness

Lumen is a measure of brightness produced by a particular light source. More lumens per watt equals to more brightness.

Switching to LED lights will give you –

-          Brightest light output

-          Reduced electricity bill by almost 60-70%

-          An LED bulb is much safer as it does not emit toxic mercury unlike a CFL bulb. (When toxic mercury comes in contact with human body, it can lead to various health hazards that could prove fatal especially for kids and pregnant women)

The table below would help you choose the right LED bulb. For example, your traditional 60W bulb is equivalent to a 5W LED bulb. Similarly, your CFL ranging from 18W - 23W is equivalent to a 10W LED bulb.

All the figures listed above are ranges-averages based on general guidelines. Actual specifications will differ from brand to brand.
