'Viduthalai Puligal' (LTTE cadres) have killed a number of people in Sudanthirapuram area when they tried to flee from them," Daya Master, who surrendered to the Army last week, told the Sri Lankan state television.
Two LTTE leaders Daya Master and George, who were arrested after they surrendered to forces during the last phase of the civil war in Sri Lanka, were today released on a bail by a Colombo court.
Releasing a report of public hearings conducted in various SEZ areas in the state, a member of the group, Professor Shanmugam Velayutham of the Chennai-based Loyola College, said land for the purpose of SEZ was 'being acquired from farmers' and handed over to big business houses, at the 'expense of the former's livelihood.' There was a danger of some real estate mafia exploiting the situation to secure some land for their business.
The Indian textile industry, hit hard by recession in the United States and the European Union, said a steep 20 per cent rupee depreciation and the Rs 1,400-crore (Rs 14 billion) package has not helped in boosting sagging exports and demanded that the government should do more to help it come out of the woods.
