Smooth, icy plains have been spotted on the surface of Pluto, in the latest images released on Friday from a NASA spacecraft that flew by the dwarf planet this week.
The new, apparently less lofty mountain range was found on the lower-left edge of Pluto's best known feature, the bright, heart-shaped region named Tombaugh Region.
A preliminary analysis of the image shows two distinct layers of haze.
After stripping Pluto of planet status in 2006, some astronomers want to reclassify it once again, says Devangshu Datta.
Ahead of this momentous event, learn why the spacecraft won't be stopping at the dwarf planet and much more.
