The body of an infant, allegedly partially eaten by dogs, was found dumped with garbage at the district women's hospital in Lalitpur. The infant's mother, Sangeeta, had given birth to a premature baby who died shortly after birth. The hospital claims it handed the body over to the family, but the family alleges they were instructed to hand the body over to an individual who would cremate it for Rs 200. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body.
40 children were admitted to the special newborn care unit.
Three children admitted in government-run Kamla Nehru Children's Hospital in Bhopal died in a fire that broke out on Monday night, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.
After delivering three stillborn children, Hirkanya Bhanarkar (39) had finally conceived and given birth to a girl on January 6, only to lose her in the fire.
The deadly fire at the special newborn care unit of the Kamla Nehru children's hospital in Bhopal started when a ventilator machine was plugged in and sparks flew, an inquiry report said on Wednesday.
The fire broke out at the Prime Criticare Hospital at Kausa in Mumbra locality near Thane at 3.40 am. There were no coronavirus patients in the hospital, he added.
Many parents whose newborn babies were among those dead in the Bhandara hospital fire have blamed the staff there for dereliction of duty. They claimed that no doctor or nurse was present in the unit when fire broke out.
Opposition Congress on Wednesday claimed a total of 14 children died at the Madhya Pradesh government-run Kamla Nehru children's hospital in Bhopal in the last 48 hours, contrary to the state government's claim that only four infants lost their lives in the November 8 blaze, and demanded a probe by a sitting judge of the high court.
Thackeray said the probe will ascertain if the fire was an accident or was the fallout of ignoring an earlier safety report.
The tragedy comes two days after 22 COVID-19 patients who were either on ventilator or oxygen support, suffocated to death when their oxygen supply stopped suddenly due to a malfunction in the main storage at a civic hospital in Nashik.
The newborns, who were just about one to nine days old, had not even been named by their parents as they were admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of the government-run Kamala Nehru Hospital for treatment.
The infants were aged between a month and three months, a doctor said. District civil surgeon Pramod Khandate said fire broke out at the Bhandara district hospital at around 1.30 am. There were 17 babies in the unit and seven were rescued, he added.
On the directions of Chief Minister Raman Singh, the government has constituted a team of specialist doctors to probe the deaths that occurred on Sunday at Dr B R Ambedkar Memorial Hospital.
