Assam's Education and Health minister, Dr Himanta Bishwa Sharma on Tuesday fired a broadside at the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA)- anti-talks faction- for trying to malign his image by stating that he was a former member of the non-military (political wing) of the outfit.

The Assam government has decided to take stringent measures against medical students who graduate from government colleges but shy away from joining government hospitals to serve the people of the state.The government has already slapped legal notices on 32 such post-graduate doctors to join government hospitals, failing which they will have to pay back the full cost of their medical education. The state has faced a serious shortage of specialist doctors in govt hospitals.

Dhiraj Yadav, an 18-year-old student from Assam who was studying in Pune, has been diagnosed with swine flu. He is the first case of swine flu in the north-eastern state.Yadav, a resident of Beltola Survey area in Guwahati, was admitted to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Civil Hospital on August 13. Assam Health Minister Dr Himanta Bishwa Sharma has urged citizens not to panic as the patient had already been isolated at the hospital.
