New Delhi-based businessman Krishan Kumar Karnani had to cancel his order resulting in humiliation and loss of goodwill in the market as the bank's cheque of Rs 1,72,000 was dishonoured with remarks 'stop payment'. Karnani, who had approached the bank following an advertisement in the newspapers on August 21, 2000 for 'spot loan', was found eligible under the scheme.

Investors in a company declared defunct or sick are entitled to get their money back with interest as such a default on the part of the company amounts to deficiency in service, the Delhi consumer commission has said. Cimmco Birla Limited, a S K Birla group company, approached the commission seeking relief against a district forum's order to pay the redemption amount alongwith interest to city-resident Anil Sethi who had invested Rs 2,000 in the company's debentures in 1991.

A bank cannot be asked to pay the amount of a misplaced cheque unless it is proved that the instrument has been encashed by a third person, the Delhi Consumer Commission said.At the most, the bank can be held liable to pay compensation for the negligence in misplacing the cheque, the Commission said.

Bedi was operated in All India Institute of Medical Sciences on August 22, 2001, for removal of a tumor, but to his utter shock, he was rendered unable to speak following the surgery, the complaint had alleged. Calling the symptom usual, the doctor assured that he would regain his voice after a few days. But in a subsequent test, Bedi was told that a nerve was cut during the surgery and a post-operative negligence in treating the same had led to paralysis of the nerve.
