Mohanti has been evading police teams from Orissa and Rajasthan since August 24, 2007. A Jaipur court had declared the officer an absconder on the charge that he had helped his son jump parole and go into hiding.

"We searched for Mohanti at a hospital in the Buxi Bazar area and also went to DGP's office for the second time on Tuesday expecting that he would be present there. But there was no trace of him."
Mohanti said he has avoided speaking to friends and relatives on phone since Bitihotra went missing but had always welcomed calls from Rajasthan Police and provided all information regarding his son that was available with him.
