The Jharkhand government has decided to release 23 convicts serving life sentences in prisons across the state, focusing on their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
The Supreme Court has ordered the release of Sukhdev Yadav, convicted in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case, citing completion of his 20-year sentence. The court questioned the Sentence Review Board's rejection of his remission plea.
Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena has recommended an NIA probe against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for allegedly receiving political funding from the banned terrorist organisation 'Sikhs for Justice', Raj Niwas sources said on Monday.
Sharma, son of former Union minister Venod Sharma, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi high court in December 2006 for killing Jessica Lal in 1999.
Manu Sharma, the convict in the murder case of Jessica, and Mattoo's killer Santosh Singh were among 204 who had approached the board, headed by state Home Minister Satyendar Jain, the sources said.
Justice Mukta Gupta granted a three-week parole to Santosh Kumar Singh, who is serving life term for the 1996 rape and murder of law student Priyadarshini Mattoo, to appear for LLM examination.
The court said that till his plea seeking remission and premature release is decided by the competent authority, he will remain out of jail.
The SRB, at its meeting, recommended release of 22 convicts on completion of their sentences and rejected 86 other cases, including the three high-profile murder cases.
The high court set aside and quashed the recommendations of the sentence review board (SRB) which had rejected Sharma's representation for pre-mature release.
