India's largest edtech firm Byju's will fire 1,000 employees in a fresh round of layoffs across departments. With the latest round, total job cuts at the company have mounted to around 3,500. According to sources, fresh job cuts are an attempt by the company to improve its finances and work towards a path to profitability.

Edtech giant Byju's is set to lay off nearly 2,500, or 5 per cent, of its employees as part of an "optimisation" plan. The move by India's most valuable start-up comes amid a funding winter and steep losses. "To avoid redundancies and duplication of roles, and by leveraging technology better, around 5 per cent of Byju's 50,000-strong workforce is expected to be rationalised across product, content, media, and technology teams in a phased manner," said the company in a statement. In June, Byju's laid off about 600 employees at its group companies -WhiteHat Jr and Toppr.
The tax portal problem is a goof-up by both sides, and making Infosys the only villain in the story is quite unfair, argues Shyamal Majumdar.
Chandrashekar Kakal was operational head of the India business unit.
According to sources privy to the development, Murthy has chosen a team of four senior executives -- former Infosys India business unit head Binod Hampapur Rangadore, Ranganath D Mavinakere, Deepak Padki and Rohan Murty.
India accounted for 2.2 per cent of the revenues of Infosys.
Company says integration of various businesses will reap fruit.
The company has also turned its attention to new markets such as Australia, China, Japan, West Asia, Canada, South America and Latin America.
Infosys Head India Business Unit C N Raghupathi said for the manufacturing sector, the key areas to focus on include new product innovation.
In another significant senior-level realignment at Infosys, V Balakrishnan, one of the two internal candidates being considered for the chief executive's post, has been given additional charge of the new utilities and resources vertical.
While some are raising questions over the company's ability to regain its position as the sector bellwether, others believe problems at the company may be "much bigger than anticipated".
Balakrishnan, head of the BPO, Finacle and India business units at Infosys, is widely seen as a contender for CEO after the incumbent S D Shibulal's term ends in 2015.
At a time when speculation was rife about its course after the organisational rejig last week, Infosys on Friday validated the changes, exuding strong faith in its leadership pipeline and gave a clear signal that the company was unperturbed by the slew of senior exits in the recent past.
Company plans to raise the contribution of Indian private sector to its revenue from about 15% to about 50% in two-three years.
