OC officials visit CWG venues to check preparation

Top Organising Committee officials are visiting the various Commonwealth Games venues to take stock of the preparation and check delays in the construction work.

The Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi, vice-chairman Randhir Singh and secretary general Lalit Bhanot visited the Talkatora Indoor Stadium, Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, Jawaharal Nehru Stadium complex, Siri Fort Sports Complex, Dr Karni Singh Shooting Ranges, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex and Yamuna Sports Complex in the last four days and seemed satisfied with the facilities.

The visits were also undertaken to ensure the presence of entire team of venue operations at the stadiums comprising of the various Functional Areas.

"You have been charged with the task of making these facilities really world class," Kalmadi told the Venue Operations team in Nehru stadium complex.

"The successful delivery of the Games is in our hands and the Organising Committee completely depends on you to ensure that all the planning is actualised," Kalmadi said.

The vice-chairman and the secretary general stressed to various agencies present at the venues that there was no luxury of any delays now and that work assigned to them must be carried out within the given timelines.

They also had a small briefing session with the team present at the venue, consisting of – the venue owners, the OC staff as well as other agencies working at the venue and seemed satisfied with the facilities.

"Given the levels of commitment and passion that I see, I am confident the teams will deliver. There is no room for complacency," Singh said.

The top brass felt that the stadiums are generally ready in all respects, especially the Fields of Play. However, some issues requiring immediate attention are clearing and cleaning of the area outside the venue, landscaping, and cabling.

"I believe that the issues will be resolved by August 16," Singh said.

The employees of the OC were told that now the delivery of the Games depended completely on their level of performance while executing the tasks assigned to them at the stadiums, as this would determine how well the Games would be conducted.

The visits of OC officials commenced with the Talkatora Stadium for Boxing on August 10. The next venue reviewed was the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium for Hockey.

On August 11, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Complex was inspected which consisted of reviews of the Weightlifting venue, the Athletics venue as well as the Lawn Bowls venue.
