Lewis Hamilton was fined £6,869 pounds ($10,000) and reprimanded for failing to return his car to the pits quickly enough after claiming pole position during qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix Saturday.

The Briton snatched the top spot on the grid with a breathtaking final lap right at the end of qualifying but was so low on fuel that the team ordered him to stop his car on the circuit to ensure he could comply with the regulations of providing a fuel sample.

Hamilton climbed out of the cockpit and began pushing his McLaren before hitching a lift with a safety car.

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) later found the 2008 world champion guilty of breaking a regulation that stipulates that cars must complete all laps within a maximum time.

Hamilton retained his pole position despite the fine.
