Union Urban Development minister S Jaipal Reddy on Sunday promised action on the Central Vigilance Commission report highlighting rampant corruption in the 0construction of Commonwealth Games stadiums, saying that anyone found guilty will not be spared.
The CVC report says that almost all organizations executing construction work for the Commonwealth Games have flouted rules in tenders and increased their prices. This means contractors have been paid more what they should have got.
"CVC has come out with preliminary remarks on the alleged irregularities in the construction of Commonwealth venues. I assure you that all concerned would be punished. Nobody will be spared. We will seriously look into it," Reddy said during the inauguration of the Weightlifting auditorium inside the Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium complex for the October 3-14 Games.
Reddy, who also heads the Group of Ministers overseeing the preparations of the Games, said with the event fast approaching, media has started exaggerating problems instead of building up a celebratory mood in the nation.
"I have seen a lot of critical news items these days. Well constructive criticism is welcome, but media is exaggerating small things. Lot of negative stories are doing the rounds. Pin-point the shortcomings so that we can rectify them on time but please let's not misrepresent the bigger picture.
"We are holding the Games in India, you need to build a positive environment, there should be celebratory mood, a national festival, people of the country should feel excited," Reddy said.
On the issue of unpreparedness on the part of organisers, Reddy said, "we are all ready to host successful Games and anything left would be done before the start. Get ready for the Games."
Reddy, however, refused to react on former sports minister Mani Shankar Aiyar's comments that he will be very unhappy if the Games are successful.
"I don't want to comment on Aiyar's remarks. We are doing our best. There are some problems which are unavoidable but I am sure we will have great Games in Delhi," Reddy said.
