McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, who started 18th after a catastrophic gearbox failure in qualifying, showed all of his fighting spirit by clawing his way back to fourth place.
Later, Hamilton was promoted from fourth to third place after Toyota's Jarno Trulli was penalised for overtaking while the safety car was on the track.
Stewards later ruled that Trulli, driving a Toyota, had overtaken Lewis while the safety car was on the course and handed him a 25-second penalty, which saw him relegated from third and out of the points.
