What was your parent's reaction when you first said that you wanted to pursue gymnastics?
It was a mutual decision. It's not like one day we had a conversation to pursue this goal. I think they saw along the way, my talent and accomplishment and it was a goal worth pursuing. They were very supportive. They put a lot of the decision making in my hands. By doing that they played the most genuine role of all.
What was some of their first reaction when you won the medal?
We were all in tears. When I first saw my mom after winning the Olympic medal I just broke down. My mom has played the most influential role in my life. I knew what the medal meant to all of us in the family. It was not about the fame and celebrity status. It was about bringing the comfort and the happiness back into all of our lives.
What was your first reaction when you were up there, the medal being draped around your neck?
Honestly, I said, I knew it. It does work... All the things that I did. All the efforts put outside, the gym, the reading, the extra curricular activities, the yoga, the manifestation, the affirmation and the goal setting, all these things, I knew would work. With the medal around my neck, now I have a platform to share my story. I remember feeling like this, the feeling of pure bliss and that everybody in the world deserves to feel the same way. I thought about the less fortunate people in the world who don't get a chance to feel like this, should at least once in their life get the feeling. One thing that struck me the most after winning that medal was the fulfillment of the dream of mine -- of uplifting the human spirit. I believe that anyone else can chase their dreams. My medal might be bronze but my story is gold.
