Hiddink was appointed coach of Australia in July 2005, continuing his role as PSV boss. A clause in his contract allowed him to coach at both club and national level.
He led the Socceroos to the World Cup in Germany the following year, the first time time the team from Down Under had qualified for the finals since 1974.
