A fumble, and a revival

The initial years of success was followed by a few barren years.

In 1990, he took over at Turkish club Fenerbahce but failed to make ann impact. A consequent move to Spain a year later, a two-year period at Valencia, was equally unproductive.

However, the success re-surfaced when he was appointed coach of Netherlands.

He led the Oranje to the quarter-finals in Euro 96, where they lost a penalty shootout to France. Two years later, in the World Cup in France, the impact was even bigger.

    The Dutch beat two-time champions Argentina in the quarter-finals thanks to a stunning late Dennis Bergkamp goal before suffering another penalty shootout defeat, this time to Brazil in the semis.

    The defeat was painful, but Hiddink moved on returning to Spain to coach Real Madrid, replacing German Jupp Heynckes.

    He helped the Meringues win the World Club Cup (pictured) but sacked in February 1999 after poor domestic form. He was subsequently dismissed by Real Betis the following year after a short stint there.
