Italian Grand Prix

September 14, 2008

(From left) McLaren Mercedes' Finnish driver Heikki Kovalainen, Toro Rosso's German driver Sebastien Vettel and BMW Sauber's Polish driver Robert Kubica pose on the podium of the Monza racetrack on Sunday after the Italian Formula One Grand Prix.

Vettel won the race ahead of Kovalainen and Kubica.

  • Vettel gave his Ferrari-powered team their first win with a remarkably assured drive through the spray and slippery conditions.

Only three years ago, Toro Rosso's predecessors Minardi were more renowned for combative Australian owner Paul Stoddart and the quality of their espresso coffee than anything they produced on the track.

Minardi went 340 races without a pole while it has taken Toro Rosso, co-owned by Red Bull's energy drink billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz, a mere 49 since they took over the Faenza-based team.
