Thomas Muster (Austria) in 1995
He was the ‘King of Clay' and would have continued to be referred to thus had it not been for the advent of someone named Rafael Nadal.
Muster dominated the terre battu surface in the 1990s; in fact, in 1993 he had 55 wins in 65 matches and seven titles in as many finals on the surface, but had only one semi-final appearance (in 1990) in Paris to show for his efforts.
However, in 1995, the French Open provided the icing on his cake. Coming into the tournament as the favourite, after five titles in the year, Muster lived up to his status and scalped formidable players like Cedric Pioline, Carlos Costa, Andrei Medvedev, Albert Costa and Yevegeny Kafelnikov en route to the final.

In the decider, he beat 1989 winner Michael Chang 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 to win his lone French Open crown. The Austrian dominated the surface for the next couple of years, but failed to repeat his feat in Paris.
