Mumbai falls victim to Khali mania

May 14, 2008

Text: Matthew Schneeberger

Inside a non-descript conference room in the Hilton Towers in Mumbai, reporters fought for space, stole chairs from one another, and sabotaged seating arrangements.

This had all the excitement of a Shah Rukh press conference, plus some. This was absurd.

  • Video: What Khali told Mumbai

A dozen bodyguards, clad in black, dotted the room's periphery, eyes scanning the throng of media for anything unusual.

They were big, all of them over 6 feet tall, with bulging muscles. The group's leader, a huge Caucasian man, with a shaved head and tattoos adorning both arms, urgently whispered into another’s ear, all the while training one eye on the crowd and one on the room's large double doors.

It's wrong to judge someone by appearance, but this guy looked downright fierce.

But then, the Great Khali ducked under the doorway and entered the room, drawing a few well-earned gasps from excited journalists. And suddenly the bodyguards seemed small, almost miniature.

Standing next to the 7 foot 3 monster, the aforementioned white guy now looked cute, like a scrappy bulldog instead of the fearsome Rottweiler I'd earlier considered him.
