Ivanovic later revealed she had honed her skills hitting balls at the bottom of an empty swimming pool in her war-torn country, where bomb blasts were also a common occurence.

"I grew up playing in a swimming pool," she said.

"There were tough times, especially in 1999, during the bombings," Ivanovic added. "I thought it would be impossible to continue [playing tennis] because we didn't know how long it was going to last.
