Double world champion Mika Hakkinen will drive a Formula One car for the first time since 2001 when he tests for McLaren in Barcelona on Thursday.

McLaren said on Wednesday the 38-year-old Finn had asked for an opportunity to 're-familiarise' himself with a Formula One car.

"The team will use this test to benefit from Mika's experience and obtain his feedback with regards to changes in downforce, engine and tyres following the regulatory changes which have occurred since he last drove a Formula One car," McLaren said in a statement.

Hakkinen's last race was the Japanese Grand Prix of 2001, with McLaren.
