India's Sania Mirza [Images], who begins her campaign at the French Open on Tuesday, dropped two places to be ranked world number 40 in the latest WTA list released on Monday.
The 19-year-old returned to the courts last week at Istanbul after a three-week break to recover from a wrist and lower-back injury.
She bowed out of the US $200,000 event in Istanbul, Turkey in the singles second round after a 6-4, 1-6, 2-6 loss to Michaella Krajicek of The Netherlands. But she made it to the doubles finals of the event along with Alicia Molik [Images] of Australia.
France's [Images] Amelie Mauresmo retained her world number one spot (3272 points), with Belgian Kim Clijsters [Images] close at her heels on 3048. Former champion Martina Hingis [Images], who returned to the elite list with the Italian Open triumph, fell one place to 15 in this week's rankings.
