Tirkey suffers serious injury

October 04, 2004 22:37 IST

Dilip Tirkey could miss the next three matches of the India-Pakistan hockey series after being hit on his left wrist during Monday's Test at the National Stadium in Delhi.

Tirkey was on the Indian goal line when he was hit by a rasping flick from a penalty-corner by Sohail Abbas in the 65th minute of the match. The ball hit him on the wrist before ricocheting to his temple.

The Indian captain writhed in pain on the turf for a couple of minutes before being carried off to the bench and attended by team doctor Joginder Singh.

"I fear there may be a fracture. We will be taking him to hospital to ascertain the extent of injury. We can't say exactly what has happened," Joginder said after the match.

"We applied ice pack near the wrist and the temple, which has got a swelling. If the tests confirm a fracture, he can't play in the rest of the series."

Tirkey's injury came as a jolt to the Indian side that must win the remaining three matches to take the series, which Pakistan leads 3-1.
