Beckham will take next penalty

Trevor Huggins in Lisbon | June 15, 2004 20:43 IST

England captain David Beckham says he will take the team's next penalty despite his costly spot-kick miss against France at Euro 2004 on Sunday.

Beckham also missed a penalty in the 0-0 draw in Turkey last year that sealed England's place at the tournament but he is not expecting to lose the job.

"When I've missed penalties in the past with Manchester United or England I've always said I'll carry on doing it because I'm confident enough to overcome anything," he told a news conference on Tuesday.

"Every Sunday league player knows there's always pressure taking penalties, whether you're playing at Hackney Marshes or the World Cup final.

"But I'll put myself up and I'll take another one if I need to."

If Beckham had converted his penalty against France, England would have led the match 2-0 but they eventually lost 2-1 following two injury-time goals by Zinedine Zidane.

England's next Group B match is against Switzerland on Thursday.
