This was former Italian captain Paolo Maldini's fourth European Cup success with Milan, having played in the winning teams in 1989, 1990 and 1994. He was also in the teams beaten by French side Olympique Marseille in 1993 and Ajax of Amsterdam in 1995.

It was his sixth final. Only Spain's Francisco Gento (eight finals) and legendary Argentine Alfredo Di Stefano (seven), both of whom played for Real Madrid in its glory days in the 1950s and 1960s, have played in more.
