Beckham admits United career could be over

June 10, 2003 14:05 IST

David BeckhamDavid Beckham hinted that his 14-year career at Manchester United could be over.

The England soccer superstar -- whose future at Man United has been the subject of intense media speculation for several weeks --  told The Los Angeles Times: 'I've never said I'd never move away from Manchester and I've never said I'd end my career there. There will always be changes at a team like Man United.'

'With all the big teams there are always going to be changes because you look to strengthen the team whether you win three trophies or you win one,' Beckham, who is on a holiday in Los Angeles said. 'There's always going to be changes.'

'These rumours have been going on for two months now. About a month ago it was Real Madrid and now it's Barcelona. But I'm a Man United player. I'm contracted to Man United for another two or three years, I think. As long as they want me, I'll stay,' Beckham, who had a widely reported falling-out with Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson this season, said.

Man United Chief Executive Peter Kenyon will meet with Barcelona representatives on Thursday about possibly trading Beckham to the Spanish side.

But Beckham insists his relationship with the United boss is still okay despite being hit in the face by a boot kicked by Ferguson. He was also dropped for matches against Arsenal and Real Madrid.

'Despite what people say about me and Sir Alex Ferguson, he's been a father figure to me,' Beckham told the LA Times. 'I've been at Man United for 14 years now and without him I wouldn't be the player or the person that I am today. Of course, you have your ups and downs with any boss in any job, but with me and him it gets highlighted just a little bit more.'
