August 19, 2003 18:48 IST

India's Vaidehi Reddy and Joshna Chinappa registered contrasting victories to move into the third round of the World Junior women's squash championship in Cairo.

Vaidehi played outstanding squash to defeat Chantal Moros of Spain 9-4, 9-0, 9-1 while Joshna had to exert herself a bit before beating England's Georgina Stroker 9-4, 9-7, 10-8.

Both Vaidehi and Joshna had received a bye into the second round.

Earlier, during the first session in the morning, only one Indian out of the four who played managed to reach the second round.

Supriya Balsekar was in outstanding form as she beat Mexican No. 1 Scarycarmen Diaz 9-3, 9-5, 8-10, 9-3. But Supriya met her match in Kyla Grigg, the top seed from Canada, who beat her 0-9, 2-9, 5-9 in the second round.

The players who lost were Dipika Pallika, Sonali Philip and Alisha Mashruwala. Dipika lost to Imelda Salazar (Mexico) 2-9, 0-9, 5-9 while Sonali went down to Rachel Mcleod (New Zealand) 4-9, 0-9, 1-9.

Alisha Mashruwala was close to a win but the pace and aggression of her opponent, Jackie Laurensen (New Zealand), got the better of her and she lost 6-9, 10-8, 9-3, 7-9, 0-9.
