Schumacher, wearing a black armband on the victory podium, fought back tears as the German anthem was played.
"I am sure that she [his mother] would have wanted me to race," he said in a statement after the race. "She liked to see us in karting and she came to all the races. My parents always encouraged us and everything was done to make sure we could race."
