Indian teams back to winning
ways at chess Olympiad
The Indian men's team bounced back from the loss against Russia in the previous
round and scored a 2.5-1.5 victory over Norway in the fourth
round of the 35th Chess Olympiad in Bled, Slovenia, on Tuesday.
The Indian women continued to perform well and blanked
Azerbaijan 3-0 to make their presence felt in the women's
section.
Top seed Russia had another smooth outing against Georgia,
overcoming them by a 3-1 margin. This was Russia's fourth
straight victory in as many rounds.
Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran and Surya Shekhar Ganguly,
the two losers from the previous rounds were rested from the
Indian men's team which performed their duties quite well in the
fourth round matches.
On the top board Grandmaster Pentyala Harikrishna got an
easy draw against Einar Gausal with black pieces.
On the second board GM Abhijit Kunte took a cue from his
young colleague and settled for the same result against Leif
Johannessen while on the third board, double GM norm holder R
B Ramesh put it across Bae Torstein.
GM Pravin Thipsay mishandled a near winning position and
had to be content with a draw against Hersvik Daniel.
Among the Indian women, Woman Grandmaster Subbaraman
Vijayalakshmi defeated Firuza Venikhanli with white pieces,
Swati Ghate beat Zeinab Mamedjaroba and Subbaraman Meenakshi
got the better of Shukurova Meihreban.
