Sasikiran emerges joint leader
Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran defeated his compatriot Sandipan Chandra to emerge joint leader after the second round in the Smith & Williamson British Chess championships at the Riviera Centre in Torquay, on Tuesday.
The top seeded Indian, playing with white, defeated Chandra in 51 moves. He next faces Joseph G Gallagher of Switzerland.
Sasikiran is joint leader along with Gallagher, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Abhijit Kunte and Chris G Ward of England, with two points
Abhijeet Kunte defeated Mark Hebden of England while Surya Sekhar Ganguly accounted for compatriot V Saravanan to join the leaders.
The other Indian players to win their second round matches were Pendyala Harikrishna, Dibyendu Barua, Koneru Humpy, Subbaraman Meenakshi and Aarthie Ramasawamy.
Three players, Saheli Dhar-Barua, Swati Ghate and R B Ramesh, drew their matches, while Bhagyashree Thipsay and S Vijayalaskshmi lost theirs.
The event is open to British and Commonwealth players and is being played on a Swiss Open type format. There is a strong Indian entry this year with almost all the country's top players participating.
