Gopichand in quarters: Indonesian OpenAll England champion Pulella Gopichand reached the quarter-finals of the Sanyo Indonesian Open badminton championships, beating unseeded Malaysian Ayob Sairul Amar 7-2, 7-1, 5-7, 3-7, 7-0 in the third round, at the Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta on Thursday evening.The second seeded Indian ace had earlier beaten Vidre Wibowo of Indonesia 7-3, 4-7, 7-2, 7-4 in the second round and Jens Roch of Germany 5-7, 7-5, 8-6, 7-0 in the first. Amar had shocked Malaysian Open finalist Rony Agustinus of Indonesia 7-2, 7-4, 2-7, 7-5 in the second round. Top seed Lee Hyun Il of South Korea also made it to the quarter-finals, beating 12th seeded Malaysian Johan Hadikusuma 7-3, 7-0, 5-7, 7-5 in 40 minutes. Lee Hyun had beaten Malaysian Yeoh Kay Bin 7-1, 4-7, 7-4, 7-3 in the second round. In the women's singles Hong Kong's Chen Wang beat local hope Atu Rosalina in straight games 7-2, 8-6, 7-5. The only saving grace for Indonesia was the victory by Lidya Djaelawijaya, who outplayed Japanese girl Sachiko Segimoto 7-0, 7-2, 3-7, 8-6. Earlier, India No. 2 Abhinn Shyam Gupta lost in the second round, to Kai Chuen Tam of Hong Kong 0-7, 7-5, 3-7, 7-8. Abhinn had won his first round match against Anggun Nughroho of Indonesia 7-5, 7-0, 7-0. All the other Indians in the men's draw bowed out in the first round. Sachin Ratti lost to Ayob Sairul Amar of Malaysia 5-7, 5-7, 5-7, while Chetan Anand lost to the 10th seed Fung Permadi of Taiwan 4-7, 4-7, 7-5, 2-7. In the men's doubles, V Diju and Thomas Sanave, seeded 7th, lost to Alven Yuianto and Hendra A Gunawan of Indonesia 3-7, 2-7, 2-7 in the second round. The duo had a first round bye. Vijaydeep Singh and Markose Bristow also lost in the second round, to the Indonesian pair of Bambang Suprianto and Tri Kusharyanto 0-7, 5-7, 3-7. Earlier they had defeated the Japanese pair of Tooru Matsumoto and Takanori Aoki 7-5, 4-7, 0-7, 7-5, 7-3 in the first round. In the women's singles, the Indian challenge ended in the first round itself. PVV Lakshmi lost to Atu Rosalina of Indonesia 7-7, 1-7, 1-7, 3-7, Meenakshi lost to Richa Sari Pawestri of Indonesia 1-7, 7-8, 4-7, while Manjusha lost to Anastasia Emaya of Indonesia 2-7, 4-7, 1-7 in the first round. In the women's doubles, B R Meenakshi and Manjusha Kanwar lost to the Indonesian pair of O Tety Yunita and Nrnita Ernita 1-7, 7-4, 5-4, 0-7 in the first round. In the mixed doubles, V Diju and Manjusha Kanwar moved into the second round. They defeated the Indonesian pair of Robby Istanta and Mundiasto Rani 5-7, 0-7, 7-4, 7-2, 7-4 in the first round. The duo now will face the second seeded Indonesian pair of Nova Widianto and Marisa Vita in the second round. Thomas Sanave and B R Meenakshi lost to the Indoesian pair of Danang Gathot and Erla 7-5, 6-8, 7-8, 5-7, while Chetan Anand and P V V Lakshmi lost to the another Indonesian pair of Alven Yuianto and O Tety Yunita 2-7, 1-7, 1-7 in the first round. Current World champion Hendrawan of Indonesia crashed out of the tournament, losing in the first round to Bjoern Joppien of Germany 7-2, 7-5, 1-7, 5-7, 2-7. But the joy for Joppien was very shortlived, as later in the day he lost to Dane Niels Christian Kaldau in a straight games at 3-7, 2-7, 0-7. Niels will face England’s top player Colin Haughton in the third round. In other third round matches, Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia will face fifth seed Agus Hariyanto of Hong Kong; 10th seed Fung Permadi of Taiwan will face James Chua of Malaysia; 8th seed Lee Tsuen Seng of Malaysia faces Kai Chuen Tam of Hong Kong; 4th seed Marleve Mainaky of Indonesia faces 15th seed Park Tae Sang of Korea and Saman Ismail of Malaysia faces Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia.
