As a bowler, his forte is level-headedness. He is quick to suss out conditions, hit the ideal length and line and then hold it there for ever and a day. Nippy, with an easy action and a skiddy bowling style, Kumaran is an alumnus of the MRF Pace Academy in Chennai, and has the further advantage of having spent time at the Australian cricket academy in Adelaide. Dennis Lillee, head coach at the MRF Academy, rates him highly and in recent months, has been giving him specialised attention.

Now that you are in the Test side, has it come as a surprise to you or were you expecting it?
This selection has come as a pleasant surprise. Since they have chosen me it is my duty to prove the selectors right.

You played one dayers against New Zealand and after that you toured Australia, but didn't get to play in the Tests or the ODIs, did that put you off or demoralize you in any way?
I thought I would get a chance in Australia. Since it didn't happen, it didn't have any effect on me. As I have got selected for the squad, I knew I was somewhere there. I had to wait for my chance. I am just doing that, if I get a chance its up to me to prove myself.

When you went out to bowl against the South Africans, what were the thoughts that were going through your mind?
When I went in to bowl, I didn't think anything about selection. I just wanted to bowl well, maintain a good line and length. I was a bit sad that I couldn't get any wickets. I had a little bit of satisfaction in that I bowled good line and length and didn't get taken for runs. I was satisfied with my bowling.

How is it bowling to them?
Bowling to experienced persons like Gary Kirsten, Jacques Kallis, they don't give their wicket easily and punish bad balls, even length balls go for four. So it kept me concentrating all the time, you can't relax. Even a warm up game, you can't relax. I have to develop my bowling a little bit, and have to bowl a good line and length to get them out.

In India the tracks are known to assist the spinners, how are you planning as a fast bowler to cope with the pitch?
First thing is I don't look at the wickets, because that is what you get in a Ranji Trophy game or in fact in all the first class games. You should not complain about the wickets, whatever you have got you should play with it and adapt to it. If you keep complaining, you won't go anywhere.

The last time we spoke, you said your dream was to play for India. Now that you are close to that, have you revised your ambition?
To serve the country for a long time. I want to take a lot of wickets for India.
