One soldier killed, 6 hurt in Manipur ambush

At least one Assam Rifles jawan was killed and six were injured in an ambush near Wangjing Bazar in Manipur's Thoubal district on Thursday, army sources said.

Assam Rifles Deputy Inspector General Brigadier Gangadharan and his escort party were ambushed by extremists while they were proceeding towards the 59 brigade headquarters at Kakching from Thoubal, sources said, adding that on reaching Wangjimg, they were fired upon with sophisticated weapons from both sides of the road. The DIG and his wife escaped unhurt.

Strategic points in the area have been cordoned off and reinforcements sent in. A combing operation has also been launched to nab the terrorists.

Meanwhile, one Central Reserve Police Force constable of the 89 battalion, posted at A G Colony at Lamphel Pat in Imphal, was allegedly shot dead by another constable on Wednesday night. The killing was allegedly the result of a personal feud.
