US NSA Jones meets Narayanan, discusses Af-Pak situation

United States National Security Adviser James Jones met his Indian counterpart M K Narayanan in New Delhi on Thursday evening and is understood to have shared with him assessment of the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Jones, who arrived in NDelhi on Thursday after a tour of Afghanistan and Pakistan, met Narayanan at his South Block office.

His visit comes ahead of the visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to India next month. Jones is believed to have shared his assessment about the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan where massive military operations are on against the Taliban militia.He is expected to call on Defence Minister A K Antony on Friday and also meet top diplomats.

This is the first high-level visit by an US official after India and Pakistan agreed to discuss the steps taken by the government in Islamabad against terrorism directed against New Delhi.

In Islamabad, Jones met Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Kayani and is understood to have taken stock of the ongoing military operations against the Taliban in northwest Pakistan and discussed American troop surge in Afghanistan.Jones was briefed on Wednesday by Kayani on the offensive against the Taliban in Malakand and Swat, which the military says is in its final stage.
