The BJP will contest on 73 seats out of the 80 in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha elections as per the seat-sharing agreement reached between the saffron party and the Ajit Singh-led RLD.

The agreement was reached during the meeting Ajit Singh had with BJP senior leader L K Advani at his residence.

The main opposition has arrived upon a formula to give seven seats to RLD in the state, a senior party leader told PTI.

"Ajit Singh met L K Advani at his residence today in the evening. The party will contest on 73 seats in Uttar Pradesh while seven seats would be given to RLD," the leader said.

A formal announcement by the party about seat sharing in the state is expected in a couple of days.

However, the saffron party has not made clear whether RLD would be a part of the NDA or this is merely a seat sharing arrangement.

The alliance is vital for the party as its president Rajnath Singh is contesting on Ghaziabad seat, where RLD has a sizable support base.

Former UP chief minister and BJP vice-president Kalyan Singh, who recently left the saffron party, had openly declared his opposition to the BJP-RLD alliance.
