The winter session of Lok Sabha began on a stormy note on Thursday with members of Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal creating uproar over the demand for hike in sugarcane prices leading to adjournment of the House.
As soon as the obituary references were over, SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and RLD President Ajit Singh led their party members into the well of the House on the issue.
"Stop the loot of sugarcane growers," chanted the agitated members of the two parties as Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Rajnath Singh and Deputy Leader Sushma Swaraj tried to raise the issue from their seats in the front bench.
Speaker Meira Kumar tried to pacify the angry members, who were in no mood to listen, forcing her to adjourn the House till noon. The pandemonium prevailed when the House reassembled, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings for the day.
The BJP has already announced plans to move an Adjournment Motion in the House over the sugarcane issue.
The Manmohan Singh-led government is hoping to pass some key 'reforms Bills' pertaining to the insurance and pension fund sector, among others in the current session, which is scheduled till December 23.
The government is also keen to pass the long-pending Women's Reservation Bill.
