Former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, architect of India's economic reforms, passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday. Did you know these five interesting facts about him?
Manmohan Singh had enrolled in a pre-medical course in his native Punjab, but lost interest after a couple of months, according to Strictly Personal: Manmohan and Gursharan by his daughter Daman.
Despite being, quietly, a very powerful leader, Dr Singh never contested the Lok Sabha elections. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha and then became the PM.
Manmohan Singh was fluent in Hindi, but didn't know how to read Hindi. Most of his speeches were written in Urdu, although he could read Gurmukhi too.
In 1962, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru offered Manmohan Singh a position in the government. Dr Singh declined, choosing instead to continue his teaching career at Panjab University.
