Pakistan's Ambassador to the US Hussain Haqqani has rebutted fears about a coup in Pakistan following the Supreme Court's verdict declaring the National Reconciliation Ordinance as "unconstitutional".

Talking to a private television channel over telephone, Haqqani said he hopes that the military is not hatching any take over plans, adding that such moves in the past have had disastrous effects.

"Everybody including Pakistan's high military leadership have achieved consensus that the army should focus on guarding the national borders, and the elected government should run the national affairs in accordance with the Constitution, and the courts should deliver verdicts on criminal and constitutional matters in the light of law," The News quoted Haqqani, as saying.

Meanwhile, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani discussed the current scenario in the country and the prevailing political and security situation emanating after the apex court's monumental judgment during the Corps Commanders' conference.

"A comprehensive overview of various professional matters... was presented during the conference. The participants also expressed satisfaction over the state of operational preparedness of the army," an Inter Services Public Relations statement said.
